Muslim ADHD: How to cope?

Discover simple solutions to better manage ADHD as a Muslim: prayers, organization, emotions, and tools like Sunna Planner to stay focused.

🤓 I know it can be hard to read an article when you have ADHD.So let’s get straight to the point: short, simple, and useful sentences.

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is not that rare. Many people — including Muslims — live with it every day.
It’s not a weakness. It’s just a brain that works differently.

In short:

  • ADHD = trouble focusing, organizing, and managing time.
  • Lots of energy, but often poorly channeled.
  • Fast thoughts, frequent forgetfulness.
  • Sometimes impulsivity and hypersensitivity.

It’s not a lack of faith or willpower.
It’s simply a different way of experiencing life and seeing the world.
And with the right tools, you can turn this difference into a strength.

⚠️ The tips below might not all work for you and that’s okay! Try what you can. If something doesn’t suit your personality, leave it aside and keep searching for what helps you live with ADHD and unlock your full potential, in shaa Allah!

Living with ADHD as a Muslim

When you are Muslim and have ADHD, the challenges are unique.
Islam requires focus, organization, and consistency, three things that can be tricky.

Examples:

  • Prayer: Hard to concentrate, thoughts wander.
  • Qur’an reading: You read a page but don’t remember what you just read.
  • Organization: Forgetting, procrastinating, doing everything at once in a burst of energy but struggling to stay consistent.
  • Emotions: High sensitivity, frustration, guilt for “not doing enough,” feeling misunderstood.
  • Religious routine: Hard to stay regular with prayers, dhikr, and Qur’an reading.

This is not a sign of weak faith. It’s a test, and every little effort is rewarded by Allah.

Simple & useful solutions

Heureusement, il existe des moyens pour mieux gérer le TDAH et progresser dans ta vie spirituelle et personnelle. Pas besoin de tout changer d’un coup. L’idée, c’est d’avancer pas à pas.

✅ Organization

Use Sunna Planner to:

  • Create habit lists by category: religion, lifestyle, learning, work.
  • Add your own custom tasks for independence.
  • Sort tasks by priority: urgent, to-do, low (based on Eisenhower Matrix).
  • Set reminders for prayer, dhikr, or Qur’an reading.
  • Get notifications and add notes so you don’t forget anything.
  • Stay focused with the Pomodoro method: 25 minutes work + 5-minute break.
  • Break big tasks into small steps.
    • Example: “Learn a surah” is a project that takes weeks or months — not one day.

👉 Result: You move forward gradually without feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. You start your day knowing exactly what to do.

✅ Managing Emotions

  • Daily dhikr: Calms the heart, reduces stress, helps regulate emotions. There is a duaa for every situation!
  • Deep breathing: Take 3 deep breaths before or after prayer.
  • Prayer focus trick: To remember the number of rakaat, lightly move your fingers on your right hand (resting on your left) toward your wrist after each rakaat.
  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts to clear your mind.

👉 When you take care of your emotions, you find more peace and can move forward with clarity.

✅ Spirituality

  • Read Qur’an even for just 5 minutes — no need for an hour if it feels too much.
  • Remember: Allah rewards the effort, not perfection.
  • Turn every useful task into an act of worship (niyyah).

👉 Every small step counts. Allah loves consistent actions, even if they are small.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are few.” (Muslim)
